What actually leaks, and when
당근마켓·번개장터에 자취방 가구나 자동차를 올릴 때, 매물 사진의 GPS 좌표만으로 사는 집 위치가 그대로 노출될 수 있습니다. 차량 번호판이나 창밖 풍경을 가려도 EXIF 좌표는 남아 있어 별도로 지워야 합니다. 학교·회사 게시판, 블로그, 커뮤니티에 일상 사진을 올리기 전 정리하는 것도 같은 이유에서 권장합니다.
EXIF에는 위도·경도(GPS) 외에도 카메라/폰 모델, 렌즈, 촬영 일시, 셔터·ISO 같은 촬영 설정, 때로는 일련번호까지 들어갑니다. 위치는 보통 휴대폰 카메라로 찍은 JPEG와 HEIC에 붙고, 화면 캡처나 PC에서 저장한 PNG에는 GPS가 없는 대신 생성 도구 정보가 남기도 합니다. 그래서 JPEG는 화질을 건드리지 않고 메타데이터 블록만 떼어내고, PNG·WebP는 다시 인코딩하면서 메타데이터가 함께 사라집니다.
이 도구는 브라우저 안에서만 동작해 사진을 서버로 보내지 않으므로, 신분증 사본이나 가족 사진처럼 민감한 이미지도 안전하게 정리할 수 있습니다. 다만 메타데이터를 지운다고 사진 속에 찍힌 간판·주소·창밖 풍경 같은 '눈에 보이는 단서'까지 사라지는 것은 아닙니다. 또 이미 인터넷에 올린 사진은 원본이 캐시·재배포되었을 수 있으니, 지운 파일은 다시 올리기 전 단계에서 쓰는 것이 가장 효과적입니다.
When you list furniture from your studio apartment or a used car on a marketplace, the GPS coordinates buried in the listing photos can reveal exactly where you live. Blurring a license plate or the view out the window doesn't help, because the EXIF coordinates stay behind and have to be removed separately. The same caution applies before posting everyday photos to forums, blogs or community boards.
Beyond latitude and longitude (GPS), EXIF can hold the camera or phone model, lens, capture date and time, shooting settings like shutter and ISO, and sometimes a serial number. Location is usually attached to JPEG and HEIC shot on a phone; screenshots and PNGs saved on a computer carry no GPS but may still note the tool that made them. That's why JPEG is cleaned by detaching the metadata block without touching the pixels, while PNG and WebP are re-encoded so the metadata drops out in the process.
Because this tool runs entirely in your browser and never sends photos to a server, you can safely clean sensitive images like ID scans or family pictures. Keep in mind, though, that stripping metadata does not erase visible clues inside the photo itself — a storefront sign, a street address, or a recognizable view. And once an image is already online, the original may have been cached or re-shared, so this works best as the step right before you upload.

EXIF에 저장된 '촬영 일시' 값은 제거되므로, 그 값을 기준으로 정렬하는 일부 앱에서는 순서가 바뀔 수 있습니다. 다만 파일이 만들어진 날짜는 운영체제가 따로 관리하므로 폴더에서 사진이 사라지거나 못 쓰게 되지는 않습니다. 원본의 촬영 시각을 보존해야 한다면 정리본을 따로 저장하고 원본은 남겨 두세요.
The 'date taken' stored in EXIF is removed, so apps that sort by that field may reorder the photo. Your operating system tracks the file's own dates separately, though, so the picture won't disappear from a folder or become unusable. If you need to keep the original capture time, save the cleaned copy separately and keep the original.

But channels that pass the original file through largely intact — messaging apps, email, marketplace listings — often keep the GPS data. If you're unsure where a photo will end up, it's safer to strip it yourself first.
