Plenty of upload forms demand something like 'JPG, under 200KB' — job application portals, exam and certification sign-ups, university and visa forms all check the format and the size at the same time. Phone photos are usually 3–8MB, so they get rejected almost every time as-is. Drop the required ceiling (say 200KB) into target-size mode and the quality is tuned automatically to land under it, so you clear the form in one pass instead of re-shooting or re-cropping.
Compression really has two separate dials: quality (how hard JPEG/WebP squeezes) and resolution (the pixel dimensions). For anything headed to a screen or a forum, scaling a 4000px original down to about 1600px alone cuts the size sharply with no visible loss. When you need to print or keep the original dimensions, leave the resolution alone and lower only the quality. For very tight targets, nudging both dials gives a cleaner result than crushing quality on its own.
Trying to shrink an already-compressed JPG often costs you visible quality while barely reducing the file — in that case, reduce the resolution instead. Because compressing re-encodes the image, it also strips EXIF metadata such as GPS location as a side effect. Everything runs inside your browser, so the photos are never sent to a server, and even sensitive shots like ID cards or contracts stay on your device.

JPEG/WebP compression steps the quality level until the file fits under your limit, so it usually lands a little below the target (for example, 185KB for a 200KB goal). The point is staying under the cap, so a slightly smaller result is expected. If a target is so low it can't be met by quality alone, reducing the resolution too will get you there.
투명 배경 PNG(로고·아이콘)도 압축되나요?Can it compress a transparent PNG, like a logo or icon?
압축은 되지만 PNG로 유지하면 사진만큼 줄지 않습니다. 투명도가 꼭 필요하면 출력 형식을 WebP로 바꾸세요. WebP는 알파 채널(투명 배경)을 지원하면서도 PNG보다 훨씬 작습니다. 투명도가 필요 없다면 JPEG가 가장 작지만 배경이 흰색으로 채워집니다.
It can, but keeping it as PNG won't shrink as much as a photo would. If you need the transparency, switch the output format to WebP — it supports an alpha channel (transparent background) while being far smaller than PNG.
