HEIC는 'High Efficiency Image Container'의 약자로, HEVC(H.265) 압축을 사진에 적용한 형식입니다. 같은 화질을 JPG의 절반 가까운 용량에 담을 수 있고, 10비트 색·투명도·여러 장을 한 파일에 담는 기능까지 지원해 아이폰은 이를 기본값으로 씁니다.

문제는 호환성입니다. JPG는 1992년에 나와 거의 모든 기기·앱·웹사이트가 읽지만, HEIC는 HEVC 코덱 라이선스가 걸려 있어 윈도우 10/11에서 기본으로 열리지 않고, 카카오톡 PC·일부 채용 사이트·관공서 업로드 폼에서 거부되는 경우가 많습니다.

즉 HEIC 자체가 나쁜 게 아니라 '받는 쪽'이 못 읽는 것이 문제입니다. 그래서 내 기기에선 잘 보이던 사진이 남에게 보내거나 PC로 옮기는 순간 막히는 일이 생깁니다.

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container — it wraps photos in HEVC (H.265) compression. It stores the same quality in roughly half the size of a JPG, and supports 10-bit color, transparency, and multiple images in one file, which is why iPhones default to it.

The catch is compatibility. JPG dates back to 1992 and almost every device, app, and website reads it, while HEIC relies on the licensed HEVC codec. That's why Windows 10/11 often won't open it out of the box, and why some hiring portals, government upload forms, and desktop chat apps reject it.

So HEIC isn't 'bad' — the problem is the receiving end can't read it. A photo that looks fine on your phone suddenly fails the moment you send it to someone else or move it to a PC.

아이폰에서 아예 JPG로 찍게 설정하기

이미 찍은 사진이 아니라 앞으로의 사진이 문제라면, 카메라 설정만 바꿔도 됩니다. 설정 > 카메라 > 포맷에서 '높은 호환성'을 선택하면 그때부터 찍는 사진이 JPG로 저장됩니다. '높은 효율성'이 HEIC입니다.

다만 이렇게 하면 용량이 늘고, 이미 갤러리에 쌓인 기존 HEIC 사진은 그대로 남습니다. 또 하나의 팁: 아이폰에서 맥·윈도우로 사진을 옮길 때 '설정 > 사진 > Mac 또는 PC로 전송' 항목을 '자동'으로 두면, 케이블 전송 시 아이폰이 가능한 경우 JPG로 변환해 내보냅니다.

정리하면 '앞으로 찍을 사진'은 카메라 포맷 설정으로, '이미 찍은 HEIC'는 아래의 변환 방법으로 해결하는 것이 가장 깔끔합니다.

If the problem is future photos rather than ones you already took, just change the camera setting. Go to Settings > Camera > Formats and pick 'Most Compatible,' and from then on photos save as JPG. 'High Efficiency' is the HEIC option.

Be aware this increases file size, and your existing HEIC photos stay as they are. One more tip: under Settings > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC, choosing 'Automatic' makes the iPhone convert to JPG when possible during a cable transfer.

In short, fix 'photos you'll take from now on' with the camera format setting, and handle 'HEIC you already have' with one of the conversion methods below.

맥은 가장 간단합니다. HEIC 파일을 미리보기(Preview)로 열고 파일 > 내보내기에서 포맷을 JPEG로 고른 뒤 품질 슬라이더를 조절해 저장하면 됩니다. 여러 장은 미리보기에서 한꺼번에 선택해 내보낼 수 있습니다.

윈도우는 기본 상태에서 HEIC를 못 여는 경우가 많은데, Microsoft Store의 'HEIF 이미지 확장' 및 'HEVC 비디오 확장'을 설치하면 사진 앱에서 열고 '다른 이름으로 저장'으로 JPG 변환이 가능합니다. 단 HEVC 확장은 유료(약 1,300원)인 경우가 있어, 한두 장이라면 굳이 설치하지 않는 편이 빠릅니다.

수십~수백 장을 한 번에 바꿔야 한다면 OS 기본 도구보다 일괄 변환이 되는 방법이 효율적입니다. 이때 다음 섹션의 온라인 방식이 설치 없이 가장 빠릅니다.

Mac is the easiest. Open the HEIC in Preview, choose File > Export, set the format to JPEG, adjust the quality slider, and save. To do several at once, select them all in Preview and export together.

Windows often can't open HEIC by default, but installing the 'HEIF Image Extensions' and 'HEVC Video Extensions' from the Microsoft Store lets the Photos app open them and 'Save As' a JPG. Note the HEVC extension is sometimes a small paid add-on, so for just a photo or two it may be faster to skip it.

마지막으로 사진에는 촬영 위치(GPS)·시간 같은 EXIF 메타데이터가 들어 있습니다. 변환 도구마다 이를 유지하거나 제거하는 정책이 다르니, 위치 노출이 걱정되면 변환 후 메타데이터가 남았는지 확인하는 습관을 들이는 것이 좋습니다.

JPG uses lossy compression, so a little quality is shaved off each time you convert. Rather than re-editing and re-saving a file that's already JPG, keep the original HEIC and convert from it whenever you need to. Set quality to 90% or higher and the difference is hard to see by eye.

Because HEIC is smaller than JPG, be aware your file can actually get bigger after converting. If you want to preserve quality and still cut size, the answer is a separate compression pass afterward — and note that PNG is inefficient for photos, so unless it's a screenshot or logo, JPG is usually the better choice.

Finally, photos carry EXIF metadata like GPS location and capture time. Different converters keep or strip this differently, so if location exposure worries you, get in the habit of checking whether the metadata survived after conversion.
